studying math is a bit like getting a board game with all of the pieces, some of the rules, and none of the directions. you play for a while, moving your pawn from room to room until you’re finally ready to call checkmate. your advisor comes along, asks you why you haven’t built any houses on the boardwalk, and gives you some cryptic advice about a lead pipe. then you realize you’ve still got to remove a funny bone and you should’ve been rolling the dice. and you still have no idea what you’re doing.
